I was torn between the MA 4000 and the Explorer 4000. I decided to get this one because I live near Lake Tahoe and think it will be better for the snow and wet climate. The bag material feels very durable. But who cares what I think. I drug it through mud, rocks, on exposed rock cement and washed it off with a hose and to my surprise no damage. A little white left over from the cement but only aesthetic. This bag will hold what you need. 66 liters is plenty and if you have more room you will just feel the need to fill it up. The pockets are fine and stretch well to hold your water bottles and whatnot. you can enter the main compartment from the top, back and a small side pocket. The bottom of the bag can either become part of the large bag making it deeper or be zippered off to make a separate sleeping bag section. It should be noted that by sleeping bag I mean a extremely compressible “down” bag or quilt. If you use a standard or synthetic fill mummy bag 99% probably will not fit. I really think the bag is constructed well but it will be a little difficult to adjust the height adjuster if it has slipped out of its bracket like mine was when it arrived. Once fixed, it rides well and has a nice fat comfortable hip belt. You are not buying this for your “Ultra Light” kit, you are buying this because it is rugged and when you get to your camp site you can huck it on the ground and not be afraid that when you pick it up all your stuff will fall out of the rip in the bottom. Now, why only 4 Stars??? My only complaint is that the zipper for the lower sleeping bag is ridiculously hard to use when you put in your sleeping bag. I did not believe the reviews of people pulling with all their might to close it. I was humbled by a zipper. Zipping forward and back many times seems to do the trick. I hope that this is addressed in the next update of this design. It should not be a deal breaker but is quite annoying none the less. After real world use, I fully recommend this bag.
